Money for Home Reading

Cathy Peattie is urging local parents and community groups to apply for their share of £300,000 which is available for home reading projects.

“We know that children who enjoy reading at home have a big head start in the classroom," said Cathy. "Parents and carers play a critical role in getting children enthusiastic about reading. The funding available could support parents or community groups to set up initiatives like a book bag club, or lending library which will ultimately encourage reading at home.”

The Scottish Executive’s Read Together! small grants scheme, which has has already awarded £1.6 million, provides start-up costs for sustainable projects that bring parents, carers and young people together to encourage home reading. Staff costs, travel and subsistence are not funded. To be successful, applicants must demonstrate the sustainability of their scheme.

The closing date for applications is 31 May 2006. Application forms are available from Learning and Teaching Scotland, Gardyne Road, Dundee, DD5 1NY, telephone 01382 443 600 and on the Read Together! Home Reading Initiative website at www.readtogether.co.uk. Applications received after this date will not be considered.
