Local Newspaper WeekCathy Peattie MSP has tabled a motion in the Scottish Parliament in support of Local Newspaper Week, highlighting the importance of local newspapers, and applauding the dedication of newspaper staff. S2M-4357 Cathy Peattie: Local Newspaper Week, 8 to 14 May 2006That
the Parliament notes that 8 to 14 May 2006 is Local Newspaper Week; believes
that local newspapers such as the best-selling Falkirk Herald, the Grangemouth
Advertiser and the Boness Journal are focal points for their communities,
providing a forum for debate on local issues and information and feedback
about local events; notes that local newspapers, through their editorial
content and advertising, play an important role in the local economy;
believes that local newspapers are an essential component of local democracy,
facilitating the dialogue between elected representatives and their constituents,
and applauds the hard work of newspaper staff whose dedication underpins
the success of the local newspaper industry. Our local papers are an essential part of our local communities, said Cathy. They keep us in touch with what is going on, allow us to make our views known to each other, and campaign with us on issues such as our local health services. Locally and nationally - democracy depends on newspapers being ethical and fair in their coverage, forceful in support of public concerns, and fearless in their quest to publish the truth. Local newspapers have a long history, but are moving with the times. Nowadays, their websites also provide an important service to community - but given their loyal readerships, I am sure that their printed versions will be with us for a long time to come. In Local Newspaper Week, I send best wishes to everyone who works for our local papers. |
