New act gives parents a stronger voice

Under the new Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement) Act, which came into force on Wednesday 13th September, parents are automatically members of the parent forum at their child's school, allowing them to get involved in setting up new parent councils.

The act also states that local authorities and schools must ensure parents are given information on how to help their child's learning at home and provide them with opportunities to contribute to the life of the school.

“This will give parents a stronger voice and allow them to get more involved in their child’s schooling,”
said Falkirk East MSP Cathy Peattie.

“We know that children whose parents are involved in their education achieve better results and get more from their education. The Act aims to encourage parents to get more involved and obliges schools to make parents feel more welcome.

“A major part of the new law is the parent council system which will replace school boards next August.
The councils will be much more flexible and accommodating to parents, allowing them to focus on the issues that matter to their school and child.”

Guidance on the new act has been published by the Scottish Executive, and is available to read or download on the Scottish Executive website http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2006/09/08094112/0, or from Cathy Peattie's office (01324 666026).
