Uplift ChargesFalkirk East MSP Cathy Peattie is concerned that new Council charges for uplift, and the maximum of 4 uplifts per household per annum, 2 non chargeable and 2 chargeable, will lead to an increase in fly-tipping. Cathy said that her office had investigated how special uplifts work in other areas: Eleven local authorities still provide unlimited free uplifts, she said, Several others, like Falkirk, provide some free uplifts. Charges, where they exist, are mostly lower than Falkirk. East Lothian charge £1, Dundee £7. Only five councils charge more than Falkirk - but of those, two provide the first five uplifts free, Stirling has some exemptions, and in Clackmannanshire, council and some housing estate tenants get free uplifts. Falkirk is the only council which has a maximum number of paid uplifts, said Cathy. Other areas with lesser charges have experienced problems, so clearly, there is a high risk that this will lead to furniture and other items being dumped on the streets. This is compounded by the limit on uplifts. Noting that the Council will no longer uplift kitchen units or bathroom suites, Cathy pointed out that commercial fitters will often taken old units and suites, but warned that householders are responsible for making sure that anyone who removes such waste is properly registered and does not fly-tip.
