Young Scots get cheap travel

Cheaper bus train and ferry travel for young people will be introduced in January 2007.

The young persons concessionary travel scheme will:

  • give all 16-18 year olds living in Scotland a third off single bus fares across the country

  • give 16-18 year olds a free rail card entitling them to a third off rail travel within Scotland

  • give 16-18 year olds who are resident on Scottish Islands two free return journeys to the mainland each year;

  • include full time volunteers up to the age of 25 who are actively contributing to their community.

“I'm pleased that full time volunteers up to the age of 25, along with all those aged 16-18, will soon be able to enjoy cheaper public transport, recognising their needs and the contribution they make to Scotland.

“This makes their access to work, education and leisure opportunities easier and cheaper, and it is good for public transport. Along with with other schemes, it will use the National Entitlement smartcard as it is rolled out across the Scottish bus fleet.”

The Young Persons’ concessionary scheme will be administered by Transport Scotland. Until the smartcard rollout, an interim card will be issued to all eligible applicants to access the bus discount. A text and web service to be launched in January will give young people information on how they can apply for the discounts via their local authority. The scheme is expected to cost between £27m and £30m per year depending on take-up.
